Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area. The Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2. (Click on the map to enlarge - 70kB)

Komodo National Park was established in 1980 and was declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. The park was initially established to conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), first discovered by the scientific world in 1911 by J.K.H. Van Steyn. Since then conservation goals have expanded to protecting its entire biodiversity, both marine and terrestrial.

Komodo National Park is currently among three destination in Indonesia that has been qualified in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign held by the New 7 Wonders Foundation (two other candidates is Lake Toaba and Krakatau Island). You may support Komodo National Park to become the New 7 Wonders of Nature by voting through the following the URL: http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/liveranking/

The majority of the people in and around the Park are fishermen originally from Bima (Sumbawa), Manggarai, South Flores, and South Sulawesi. Those from South Sulawesi are from the Suku Bajau or Bugis ethnic groups. The Suku Bajau were originally nomadic and moved from location to location in the region of Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara and Maluku, to make their livelihoods. Descendents of the original people of Komodo, the Ata Modo, still live in Komodo, but there are no pure blood people left and their culture and language is slowly being integrated with the recent migrants.

Little is known of the early history of the Komodo islanders. They were subjects of the Sultanate of Bima, although the island’s remoteness from Bima meant its affairs were probably little troubled by the Sultanate other than by occasional demand for tribute.

There are presently almost 4,000 inhabitants living within the park spread out over four settlements (Komodo, Rinca, Kerora, and Papagaran). All villages existed prior to 1980 before the area was declared a national park. In 1928 there were only 30 people living in Komodo Village, and approximately 250 people on Rinca Island in 1930. The population increased rapidly, and by 1999, there were 281 families numbering 1,169 people on Komodo, meaning that the local population had increased exponentially. Komodo Village has had the highest population increase of the villages within the Park, mostly due to migration by people from Sape, Manggarai, Madura, and South Sulawesi. The number of buildings in Kampung Komodo has increased rapidly from 30 houses in 1958, to 194 houses in 1994, and 270 houses in 2000. Papagaran village is similar in size, with 258 families totaling 1,078 people. As of 1999, Rinca’s population was 835, and Kerora's population was 185 people. The total population currently living in the Park is 3,267 people, while 16,816 people live in the area immediately surrounding the Park.

The average level of education in the villages of Komodo National Park is grade four of elementary school. There is an elementary school located in each of the villages, but new students are not recruited each year. On average, each village has four classes and four teachers. Most of the children from the small islands in the Kecamatan Komodo (Komodo, Rinca, Kerora, Papagaran, Mesa) do not finish elementary school. Less than 10% of those which do graduate from elementary school will continue to high school since the major economic opportunity (fishing) does not require further education. Children must be sent to Labuan Bajo to attend high school, but this is rarely done in fishermen’s families.

Most of the villages located in and around the Park have few fresh water facilities available, if any, particularly during the dry season. Water quality declines during this time period and many people become ill. Malaria and diarrhea are rampant in the area. On Mesa island, with a population of around 1,500 people, there is no fresh water available. Fresh water is brought by boat in jerrycans from Labuan Bajo. Each family needs an average of Rp 100,000.- per month to buy fresh water (2000). Almost every village has a local medical facility with staff, and at least a paramedic. The quality of medical care facilities is low.

Poem for Palestine: Baby Martyr

Baby Martyr

I’m six and seven
And up to eleven,

Then I’m an adult
In an Israeli court

My hands tied in the back of my back
He comes to me with a punch and a sack.

He covers my head with a hood of Zionist stench
Though my belly is tough, it will not flinch.

The noise is loud and pierces my brain.
My pathetic shirt hangs proud with a fresh blood stain.

My poor mother is worried sick, I’m sure.
She burried my brother before me. She will endure.

And my dad too, depression got him in the end
With no home, no land, no olive trees to tend.

I’m in here for days on end
Or is it months or even years, I no longer comprehend.

The noise is too loud
And I can feel the shroud.

He beats me again today
Then its another’s turn to play.

I’m broken now, but I’ll not confess.
I’ll leave my body, let those murdering bastards clean up the mess.

A few more thoughts before I go
I am human. This you must know.
You’d never know it `cause I’m tough as the rocks I throw.

I had hoped to grow a mustache so fine.
Maybe marry Muna. I’d be hers and she’d be mine
Maybe be a father….our children free in Palestine.

A poem from Palestine: Eye to eye

Look into my eyes
And tell me what you see.
You don't see a damn thing,
'cause you can't possibly relate to me.

You're blinded by our differences.
My life makes no sense to you.
I'm the persecuted Palestinian.
You're the American red, white and blue.

Each day you wake in tranquillity,
No fears to cross your eyes.
Each day I wake in gratitude,
Thanking God He let me rise.

You worry about your education
And the bills you have to pay.
I worry about my vulnerable life
And if I'll survive another day.

Your biggest fear is getting ticketed
As you cruise your Cadillac.
My fear is that the tank that just left
Will turn around and come back.

American, do you realize,
That the taxes that you pay
Feed the forces that traumatize
My every living day?

The bulldozers and the tanks,
The gases and the guns,
The bombs that fall outside my door,
All due to American funds.

Yet do you know the truth
Of where your money goes?
Do you let your media deceive your mind?
Is this a truth that no one knows?

You blame me for defending myself
Against the ways of Zionists.
I'm terrorized in my own land
And I'm the terrorist?

You think you know all about terrorism
But you don't know it the way I do,
So let me define the term for you,
And teach you what you thought you knew.

I've known terrorism for quite some time,
Fifty-five years and more.
It's the fruitless garden uprooted in my yard.
It's the bulldozer in front of my door.

Terrorism breathes the air I breathe.
It's the checkpoint on my way to school.
It's the curfew that jails me in my own home,
And the penalties of breaking that curfew rule.

Terrorism is the robbery of my land,
And the torture of my mother,
The imprisonment of my innocent father,
The bullet in my baby brother.

So American, don't tell me you know about
The things I feel and see.
I'm terrorized in my own land
And the blame is put on me.

But I will not rest, I shall never settle
For the injustice my people endure.
Palestine is our land and there we'll remain
Until the day our homeland is secure.

And if that time shall never come,
Then we will never see a day of peace.
I will not be thrown from my own home,
Nor will my fight for justice cease.

And if I am killed, it will be in Filasteen
It's written on my every breath.
So in your own patriotic words,
Give me liberty or give me death.

We Will Not Go Down (Song For Gaza)

We Will Not Go Down by Michael Heart

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they¢re dead or alive

They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains
Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who¢s wrong or right

But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze

We will not go down
In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down
In Gaza tonight

Saya Ini Sedang Futur

saya ini sedang futur
terbukti dengan ogah-ogahan datang ke pengajian tiap pekan
dengan alasan klasik kuliahlah, lelahlah, kerjalah,
sibuklah,inilah,itulah

saya ini sedang futur
jarang baca buku tentang Islam, lagi demen baca koran
dulu tilawah tidak pernah ketinggalan sekarang satu lembar udeh
lumayan
tilawah sudah tidak berkesan, nonton layar emas ketagihan

saya ini sedang futur
mulai malas sholat malam, jarang bertafakkur
ba'da shubuh, kanan kiri salam, lantas kembali mendengkur
apalagi waktu libur, sampai menjelang dzuhur

saya ini sedang futur
lihat perut semakin buncit, karena junkfood dan pangsit
kalo infaq mulai sedikit dan mulai pelit apalagi shaum sunnah, perut
rasanya ogah

ente tau ane lagi futur
sedikit dzikir, banyakan tidur belajar ngawur, IP pun hancur
shohib- shohib kagak ada yang negur

ente tau ane lagi futur
hati beku, otak ngelantur mikirin orang se-dulur, diri sendiri kagak
pernah ngukur
ente taulah ane sekarang
seneng duduk di kursi goyang, perut kenyang hati melayang
mulut sibuk ngomongin orang, aib sendiri nggak kebayang

ente tau ane bengal
bangun malem sering ditinggal
otak bebal banyak mengkhayal, udeh lupa yang namanya ajal

ente tau ane begini
udah sok tau, seneng dipuji ngomong sok suci kayak murrabi, kagak
ngaca diri sendiri

ente tau ane gegabah
petantang petenteng merasa gagah, diri ngaku 2x ikhwah kalo mo
muhasabah,
diri ini nggak beda sama sampah

ente tau ane sekarang udah kalah di medan perang ane pengen pulang
kandang,
ke tempat ane dulu dateng

saya ini sedang futur
tak lagi pandai bersyukur
seneng disanjung dikritik murung

saya ini sedang futur
malas ngurusin da'wah, rajin bikin ortu marah
sedikit sekali muhasabah, sering kali meng ghibah
ya..saya memang sedang futur

mengapa saya futur......???

mengapa tidak ada satu ikhwah pun yang menegur dan menghibur??
kenapa batas-batas mulai mengendur??

apalagi sampai tersungkur...

nb: buat semua saudaraku....kunjungilah saudaramu tengoklah dia
barang
sebentar....
mungkin keimanannya sedang berada diujung tanduk
mungkin keimanannaya sedang dipertaruhkan..
raihlah dia..rengkuhlah dia
ajaklah dia bersama melihat terbitnya fajar kebangkitan Islam
ajaklah dia bersama menuju cinta NYA menuju surgaNYa menuju ampunan
NYA

janganlah sibuk dengan diri sendiri pedulilah dengan sekelilingmu
pedulilah dengan mereka yang mengharap datangnya secercah cahaya
jadilah orang yang bermanfaat untuk orang-orang disekitarmu

The Memory Of a Mother

In an evening day, a mom wrote a poetry about her children

My relationship with my children is like the breeze,
I can't hold it, Smell it, Taste it,
And I can always feel it,
And I'll always know they'll always be back.

As my children are roses, I am the thorns,
clutching them and protecting them

As my children are sun, I am the rays,
helping them to shine and to be all that they can.

As my children are a lake, I am the water,
filling them with ideas, dream, and hopes for the future.

As my children are trees, I am the leaves,
sharing who and what I am and becoming an important part of their life.

As my children are my heart, I am the beat,
beating rhythmically to their happiness, their fear, their sadness, their excitement.

If people ask me why so difficult for me to let them go
then I will answer
that my children are part of me
therefore I must be with them,
to share all I am,
to share and teach them,
About Life, Love, and Happiness.

Don't Stop SMOKING

Don't Stop SMOKING

if You love fighting cancer

God, Why My Mom is Crying?

A Boy frequently asked to his God,
“God, Why my Mom is crying?’

God said, “because your Mom is a women.
When I made women she had to be special.

I made her shoulders strong enough to carry
The weight of the world
Yet, gentle enough to give comport.

I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth
And the rejection that many times comes from her children

I gave her a hardness that allows her to keep going
When everyone else gives up
And take care of her family through sickness
And fatigue without complaining.

I gave her the sensitivity to love her children
Under any and all circumstances,
Even when her child has hurt them very badly.

This same sensitivity helps her make a child’s boo-boo fell better
And shares in their teenagers anxieties and fears.

I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults
And fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart

I gave her wisdom to know that a good
Husband never hurts his wife,
But sometimes tests her strengths and her
Resolve to stand beside him unfalteringly.

I gave her a tear to shed, It’s hers exclusively
To use whenever it is needed.
It’s her only weakness. It’s a tear for mankind.”

Winners VS Losers

One day a student asked to his teacher,
“Teacher, what sholud I do so I can become a winner in this life not a loser?”

And the teacher said, “You have to learn the distinguish between them.
If the loser is always a part of the problem
Then the winner is always a part of the answer.

If the loser always has an excuse
Then the winner always has a program.

If the losers says, That’s not my job!
Then the winner says, Let me do it for you!

If the loser sees two or three sand traps near every green
Then the winner sees a green near every sand trap.

If the loser says, It may be possible, but it’s too difficult!
Then the winner says, it may be difficult, but it’s possible!

If you are willing to do all the winner list, you will be become a winner.

A Prayer About His Pray

I asked for strength
And God gave me dificulties to make me strong

I asked for wisdom
And God gave me problem to solve

I asked for prosperity
And God gave me brains to work

I asked for courage
And God gave me dangers to overcome

I asked for love
And God gave me troubled people to help

I asked for favours
And God gave me opportunities

I received nothing that I wanted
I received everything that I needed
My prayer has been answered

Al Ghazali’s Six Questions

One first day, Al Ghazali was sitting among his students
He asked them six interesting questions

Tell me the nearest in our life
His students answered: Parents, teachers, and friends
Al Ghazali said: It is death
Allah said, Every soul shall have a taste of death

Tell me the farthest place from earth
His students answered: Moon, sun, and stars
Al Ghazali said: it is the past
No matter how hard we try, it is unreachable

Tell me the biggest thing on earth
His students said: Mountain and ocean
Al Ghazali said: It is passion
Because of it, we can be thrown into darkest pit of the hell

Tell me the heaviest thing on earth
His students answered: Wind, dust, and cotton
Al Ghazali said: It is leaving five times pray
We leave it because of our job or business

Tell me the sharpest thing on earth
His students answered: sword
Al ghazali said: it is word

Five Things

A wise man told about a journey of his soul

He said: I found my heart worry on five things

So I looked for the answers

And I found them either on five things

First, I looked for blessing to fulfill the basic

Requirements in this world

And I found it when I was doing Dhuha Pray

Second, I looked for eternal light for the day of here after

And I found it when I was doing night pray

Third, I looked for the answer for Munkar and nakir

And I found it when I read The Holy Quran

Fourth, I looked for tool to hold on Shiratal Mustaqim

I found it when I was doing fasting and shodaqoh

Fifth, I looked for shelter of Arasy

I find it when I was doing seclusion and many abadah to Allah

Now my heart eternally rest in peace

The Scarf

They stand there with shorts, so short, excessively short, shorts that so deceptively capture from them all they know of modesty... ...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

The Scarf

They stand there with shorts, so short, excessively short,
shorts that so deceptively capture from them all they know of modesty...
...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

They stand there, face lost in a sea of make-up,
make-up that so ruthlessly captures from them all they know of freedom...
...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

They stand there, hair raining with gels, colors ?
chemicals that so menacingly capture from them all they know of purity...
...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

They stand there, so close, so very close to their ?lover?,
devoted to them, the devotion that so mercilessly captures
...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

And they stand there, talking of getting new shorts, new gels
and colors, new boyfriends, materialistic things
that so wrongfully capture from them all they know of God and love...
...and I proudly pull my scarf over my hair

For my scarf is my protector, my lover, my devotion,
my pureness, my beauty, my rememberance of God,
And I proudly pull it over my hair knowing that when I wear it,
I so rightfully thrust away all the things that the devil brought about,
And when I put it on, I am Free?

Things I have learnt

I’ve learned…. That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

I’ve learned…. That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I’ve learned…. That just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day!” makes my day.

I’ve learned…. That being kind is more important than being right.

I’ve learned…. That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

I’ve learned…. That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I’ve learned…. That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.
I’ve learned…. That money doesn’t buy class.

I’ve learned…. That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I’ve learned… That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I’ve learned…. That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I’ve learned…. That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I’ve learned…. That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I’ve learned…. That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I’ve learned…. That life is tough, but I’m tougher.

I’ve learned…. That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I’ve learned…. That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I’ve learned…. That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I’ve learned…. That I can’t choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

I’ve learned…. That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.

I’ve learned…. That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.

I’ve learned…. That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

I’ve learned…. That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.
